Dharamsala Showdown: India vs. England - Final Test Preview

Setting the Scene in Dharamsala

Now that India have won the series, there is an opportunity for England to claim a face-saving victory as the action moves to Dharamsala in the foothills of the Himalayas for the fifth and final test. India have shown their superiority and greater experience through the series but now could be forgiven for taking their foot off the gas. Weather conditions may play their part with cold mountain temperatures, even sleet forecast, together with the prospect of rain. This could bring the draw into play. It will be test number 100 for India’s R. Ashwin and he may well lead the side out as India pay tribute to one of their greats.

Milestones and Expectations

Meanwhile, one of England’s greatest, Jimmy Anderson is poised on 698 wickets to be the first pace bowler in the world to reach the 700 milestone. He may find conditions to his liking on a ground which in the past has been conducive to a bit more pace and bounce than the usual slow turner. This venue has only seen one previous test where the pitch got better on day two. Mark Wood is likely to play in place of Olly Robinson, who disappointed on his return, and is recommended at 10/3 to be England’s top first innings wicket taker.

Batting Prospects for England

Joe Root packed his tricksy shots away in the fourth test on his way to a classy century. Now he has found his form he can be backed at 10/3 to be England’s top scorer. Zac Crawley has been a model of consistency at the top of the order and is available at 9/2 as an alternative. His opening partnership with Ben Duckett continues to get England off to a solid start so once again they can be backed at 5/6 to score over 28.5 for the first wicket. Jonny Bairstow will also be celebrating 100 test landmark, but with a series average of only 21 he can be considered fortunate to keep his place.

The Indian Challenge

It’s hard to look beyond Yashami Jaiswal for India’s top scorer. He has been simply outstanding as he moves towards a record series aggregate, but Rohit Sharma tends to improve as a series progresses and he is taken at 3/1 to be India’s top scorer. The return of Jasprit Bumrah is expected and this master of his craft will enjoy these conditions.

Recommendations:

  • Match Winner: England 3/1
  • England Top Scorer First Innings: Joe Root 100/30
  • England Top Wicket Taker First Innings: Mark Wood 10/3
  • India Top Run Scorer First Innings: Rohit Sharma 3/1
  • India Top Wicket-Taker First Innings: Jasprit Bumrah 3/1
  • England Opening Partnership: Over 28.5 5/6
