Sam James is widely regarded as one of the UK’s top northern-based flat jockeys, who’s career continues to follow an upward curve. In 2023, James achieved remarkable success, securing a career-best tally of 75 winners. A significant number of these winners came while riding for the leading Karl Burke stable, where James is an integral member of the team.
Working closely with Karl Burke, James has reached new heights in his career. In October last year, they combined to win the Group 1 Qipco Fillies And Mares’ Stakes on British Champions Day at Ascot with the talented Poptronic.
The successful alliance between James and Burke doesn’t stop there, as the duo has demonstrated prowess with Burke’s juvenile horses. Notable wins together have included Darnation in the Group 3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood and Got To Love A Grey in the Listed Marygate Stakes at York.
While James has thrived riding for Karl Burke, he has also forged strong relationships with various flat trainers across the northern racing circuit. Among these connections are Grant Tuer, Craig Lidster, and Kevin Ryan.
James’s dedication to his craft is evident in his career trajectory. Before establishing himself in the UK, he honed his skills in Ireland for several years, notably riding for legendary trainer Kevin Prendergast. One of his early successes came on Almass at the Galway Festival, where he rode as an apprentice jockey in 2008.
Joining the Rhino Bet team, James will be providing followers with exclusive insights into his weekend rides as well as his main chances at the major racing festivals across the summer.
Ceiron Jones, Director of Operations at Rhino Bet said: “We’ve been talking to Sam for a while, and we’re pleased to finally put pen to paper on what is undoubtedly an exciting partnership this summer. We’re particularly excited to see the Rhino Bet brand appear at some of racing’s finest flat meetings courtesy of Sam’s breeches.”
