Leeds United v Portsmouth Betting Preview: Plucky Pompey Can Get A Result

Many people think Leeds United are going to get off to a winning start this season in their opening game against newly promoted Portsmouth at Elland Road this Saturday lunchtime, but I am not so sure.
Leeds v Portsmouth

The Unmighty Whites

I followed the Championship closely last season as my team Southampton got promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs, and I was never totally convinced when I watched Leeds. They created a lot of chances but failed to capitalise on them, and when they conceded, they often would lose their heads. People will point out that their goalkeeper, Illan Meslier, won the Golden Glove, but I don’t know how, because he is very prone to making mistakes.

Pompey Solid On Their Travels

Yes, Portsmouth have to prove themselves in the Championship, but as much as it pains me to say they were good winners of League One, and they’ve been able to keep a lot of their squad. Furthermore, they were very solid last season and they had the best defensive record on the road in the division, so that shouldn’t be underestimated.

Rebuilding Job At Elland Road

Leeds, on the other hand, have lost a few of their key players, like Archie Gray and Quentin Summerville, who regularly started for them, which means they could take a while to adapt and find the right balance in their starting eleven.

I just think this game is going to be a lot closer than the betting suggests, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Pompey were able to get a result. The South Coast side are currently 21/10 on double chance, and I can see them taking at least a point back to Fratton Park to kick start their season in the Championship.
