Seeking Guidance in Turbulent Times
Life as an athlete often comes with uncertainty, and that is something I found out first-hand. Just when I was gearing up to face my upcoming fight, my cornerman, Coach Steve, had to back out due to unforeseen circumstances. Although he provided some reasons, it left me feeling adrift and uncertain. My plans were suddenly in limbo, and I knew I needed a solid game plan and support to steer me through this final week of preparations.
Given the necessity of a proper MMA coach—someone who could devise strategies tailored to me—I knew returning to my old gym wasn’t an option. Most trainers there were fighters themselves, and I required guidance that transcended standard training routines. So, I embarked on a search for a more suitable environment, striving to maintain my physical condition while seeking new prospects for coaching support.
The Countdown to Fight Day
As the weight-in day loomed closer, uncertainties did not dissipate. Fortunately, Dan Cerrell became available to assist me on fight day. However, his limited availability presented its own challenges; he could only be present for the event itself. Under these circumstances, I had to marshal all my focus and self-discipline throughout the remaining stages of preparation.
The night before the weigh-in, I found myself at the hotel, anxious and ready to cut weight alone with my interpreter. It was a grueling experience, especially without anyone to motivate me or weigh-ins readily accessible. To further complicate matters, I discovered that Cage Warriors was not staying at the same hotel as usual, adding another layer to my mounting stress.
Triumphs Amidst Trials
Despite the odds, I powered through the night—determined to make weight. Luck graced me when the hotel provided a scale early in the morning. At 6 AM, I finally stepped onto it, elated to see that I weighed 68 kg! Just four kilograms lighter than the previous night meant that I had only two kilograms and a few pounds left to cut. A hot bath would surely do the trick to finalize my preparations. Overcoming such mental barriers proved crucial and affirming.
When the time came for the official weigh-in, I not only made weight—I ended up underweight, coming in two pounds less than featherweight. The relief and satisfaction were indescribable. Now, it was time to focus on rehydrating and regaining my strength.
Health Comes First
However, the road ahead still had its obstacles. As I began rehydrating, chugging water and nourishing my body thereafter, I started experiencing chest pain that made it difficult to walk. I mostly confined myself to my room, attempting to rest. When the pain intensified into the evening, I realized it was wise to call an ambulance for a health check-up—lucky they arrived swiftly.
Fight day arrived, but unfortunately, I was not feeling like myself. Despite my efforts to stay strong, Dan assessed my condition and ultimately decided that I wasn’t fit to fight. With heavy hearts, we canceled the battle. While a pang of disappointment washed over me, there was solace in knowing that prioritizing my health was the right decision.
Finding Clarity After Chaos
Reflecting on the chaotic journey leading up to the fight, I recognized the importance of communication and well-being. It’s vital to consult with trusted friends and professionals when navigating these turbulent waters. Always remember that while ambition fuels progress, taking care of oneself should always come first. I hope that sharing my experience helps fellow fighters and athletes in similar situations understand that sometimes, resilience doesn’t just mean pushing forward—it also means recognizing when to take a step back for your well-being.
In conclusion, whether in the world of combat sports or any other pursuit, managing setbacks gracefully will ultimately lead to growth and recovery. You may stumble on your path, but don’t forget to evaluate, reassess, and move forward with determination.
Happy training, everyone!
