ITV Racing Preview: Newmarket, Hamilton & Salisbury

The racing fanfare continues, with the 1,000 Guineas being the feature race at Newmarket on Sunday. However, the race I am most looking forward to seeing is the two-year-old conditions race at Salisbury, where we might see a Royal Ascot filly.
ITV Racing Preview Newmarket And Goodwood

1.50 Newmarket – Kalpana (Win)

I was taken by this filly when she won by 10 lengths at Newmarket last month. It’s hard to get a grasp on what she beat, but she couldn’t have won any more easily. Returning to this track won’t be a problem and I think she’s definitely worth her place in this company. If she was to bolt up in this race, connections might have to seriously think about supplementing her for Epsom.

2.25 Newmarket – Caernarfon (Win)

Cases can be made for most of these, but I am going to side with Caernarfon. Her connections have been banging the drum for her as they think she can go on to big things. Last year, she was the stable star for Jack Channon, finishing fourth in the 1,000 Guineas and third in the Epsom Oaks. I do think she likes a bit of cut in the ground, so she would welcome any rain. This is trappy, but if she’s fit and ready to go, I can see her running a solid race.

3.00 Newmarket – Intinso (Win)

I’ve been a fan of him since he bolted up at Wolverhampton in March. The last time we saw him, he finished third at Kempton when he ran well inside the final furlong. It was hard to come off the pace that day, so that effort should be marked up. The son of Siyouni is now stepping up in distance an extra couple of furlongs, which should suit him, and I think he can go very close here.

3.40 Newmarket – See The Fire (Each Way)

See The Fire might seem held on some of her form lines, but her third behind Ylang Ylang in the Fillies’ Mile was a good run. I just think we’ve not seen the best of her yet. Her last two runs came on very soft ground, and by looking at her pedigree, I think she would be better on a sound surface. The weather forecast looks promising, so if Newmarket does dry out over the weekend, it might be to her advantage.

2.05 Hamilton – Simple Star (Win)

Simple Star progressed really well on the Flat last season for Dianne Sayer, which included a win at Hamilton. We last saw her finishing second her seasonal return at Musselburgh, where she was just headed on the line. This son of Sea The Stars should strip fitter for that run, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had more to offer this season.

2.40 Salisbury – Betty Clover (Win)

There was a lot to like about the win of Betty Clover on her racecourse debut at Bath. The daughter of Time Test was well-backed in the minutes before the off, and she scooted clear of her opposition despite looking green. This looks like a better race, but I think she is classy and can put her experience to good use. If she were to win this well, Eve Johnson-Houghton might be thinking about Royal Ascot with her.
