Plymouth Argyle v Luton Town Betting Preview: Time For Whittaker To Come To The Party

Friday night’s Championship game sees Plymouth Argyle host Luton Town at the Home Park.

A Big Game For Both Teams

Plymouth Argyle v Luton Town should be an interesting game for a number of reasons. At the start of the season, I predicted Plymouth Argyle to struggle and Luton Town to win the league. So far, those predictions have had positive and negative outlooks.

Things Turning For The Hatters?

Luton started their campaign poorly and were on the end of a few thrashings, which included a 4-1 defeat to Burnley. However, it appears that Rob Edwards has started to turn things around. The Hatters have won both of their games in September, and they are coming to this one looking for a hat-trick of wins.

Despite the fact they’ve won their last two matches, they’ve not been convincing. Sheffield Wednesday were beating them 1-0 at Kenilworth Road in the last match. It was only when The Owls went down to 10-men that Luton started to come into the game and got the better of Sheffield Wednesday, scoring two late goals. I think they are hard to trust at the moment, and I’ll be going against them when it comes to winning here.

Jury Is Still Out

Plymouth, on the other hand, are yet to find any consistency. When it was announced Wayne Rooney was going to be their manager, many people thought it was a strange appointment. So far the jury is still out on him, but this could be a good opportunity to prove those doubters wrong.

In their last home game, the Green Army beat Sunderland 3-2, and they put up a valiant effort against Championship leaders West Brom, where they lost 1-0. Plymouth had several chances in that game but failed to make them count. Luton’s defence will be a weaker proposition than West Brom’s, so I suspect Argyle to get on the scoresheet.

For this game, Luton Town are odds-on to win at 17/20, which looks way too short. Plymouth are the outsiders at 11/4, and that looks overpriced to me. Therefore, I am going to be siding with Plymouth to get the job done.

Whittaker Can Find His Purple Patch

One other angle I am looking at for this game is for Morgan Whittaker to score anytime. The 23-year-old was Plymouth’s star striker last season, scoring 19 goals in the Championship. As a result, he made into the Championship Team Of The Season. This season, he’s been a little slow to find his feet, as there was a lot of speculation in the summer he could go to Rangers. However, that didn’t materialise, and he’s still a Plymouth Argyle player.

Though he’s only played three games, Whittaker has had the joint-most shots of any player in the Championship this season. It’s surely only a matter of time before he converts and starts scoring goals. At 11/5 to score anytime, I think that price is worth keeping on side.
