Presidents Cup 2024 Betting Preview: Schauffele Can Be The Key Man For Team USA

The highly anticipated Presidents Cup takes centre stage this week, bringing together some of the best golfers from around the world for Team USA and the International Team.
Presidents Cup

The All Conquering USA

The Presidents Cup might not be as prestigious as the Ryder Cup, but it’ll still be a great spectacle. When it comes to recent history, Team USA has dominated this event. They have been unbeaten in the Presidents Cup since 2003, and even then it was a tie. The International Team hasn’t won it since 1998, so they’ll be looking to stop history in its tracks.

However, the betting doesn’t see it that way. Team USA are strong favourites to retain the President’s Cup, with them being odds on at 2/5, and Team International are the outsiders at 13/5.

A Short Trip To Canada

For the 2024 Presidents Cup, the event will take place in Canada and will be played at Royal Montreal Golf Club. Despite the President’s Cup being hosted by the International Team, it means that plenty of Team USA fans will still be able to cross the border to support their team. Therefore, home advantage might not be as effective.

Matches Are Tighter Outside The USA

I do think the USA will retain the Presidents Cup, but it might not be a thrashing. In the last two President’s Cups the International Team has hosted, the winning margin has been no bigger than two points. It’s currently 18/5 for the USA to win by 1-3 points, which is probably a fair price.

Despite that, I think there is better value to be had when having a bet in the Presidents Cup. That’s why I’m looking at the top points scorer markets.

Scheffler Isn’t A Match Player

World Number One Scottie Scheffler is the favourite to be Team USA’s top run scorer at 4/1. Though we know he has fantastic ability, when it comes to team competition, he hasn’t been at his best. At the last President’s Cup he scored 0.5 points, and at the 2023 Ryder Cup he only collected 1 point. I just think he’s way too short and has to be taken on.

Schauffele The Form Pick

The player who should be the favourite in my opinion is Xander Schauffele. The 30-year-old Californian has had the year of his life, winning two majors, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship. Moreover, he comes here in great form, finishing in the top five in his last two events.

His record at the Presidents Cup is also not to be sniffed at. At the last two events, he scored three points and was the second-highest American point scorer in 2022. He’s likely to feature heavily in Jim Furyk’s plans this week, and at 6/1, I think that’s decent value.

Si Woo Kim Ready To Strike

For the International Team, I am looking at Si Woo Kim to be their top point scorer at 10/1. At the last Presidents Cup, he was their leading point scorer with 3. During that week he only lost one match, and in the singles he got the better of Justin Thomas, who was the leading US point scorer at the 2022 Presidents Cup.

The South Korean’s form has been a little mixed this year, but there have been signs he’s coming back to his best. Last week he played ok at Wentworth, and the time before that he came 5th in the BMW Open Championship at Castle Pines. I just think this could be the time to catch him, and his game could really improve coming back to a matchplay format. He shouldn’t be underestimated this week.
