Sam James: Ski Jump Ready To Try New Heights

It’s not been a bad week for me as I had a winner at Ripon on Monday riding Je Ne Sais Que for Grant Tuer. She’s a filly that looks like she could go places, so it will be interesting to see if she can back it up next time out.

This weekend I’m off to Redcar, where I’ve got a nice book of rides to keep me busy on Saturday afternoon. I like going there; it’s a very fair flat track with a long home straight. You can win from anywhere, whether you’re riding from the front or you are a holdup horse. There are not normally too many excuses riding there, and the best horse on the day usually wins. I’ve ridden a few winners there this season, so it would be great to come away with another one on Saturday.

My rides at Redcar

2.37 – Vintage Love (Grant Tuer)

She showed a bit of promise as a two-year-old placing a few times, but she’s not really kicked on this year. Having said that, her last run when she finished fourth at Beverley was probably her best effort this season. Grant is going to be putting on first-time cheekpieces for this race, so hopefully that will bring out some improvement in her, and she can take a step in the right direction.

3.12 – Ey Up Its The Boss (Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood)

This lad is in good form after he won at Ripon earlier this week. We are going to be dropping back in trip here to a mile; however, after looking at his form, I don’t think it will be a problem as he’s won over this distance before. The only concern I have is that he does have to carry a 5lb for that recent win, which is never easy, but hopefully he’ll be ok.

4.22 – Missterious (Kevin Ryan)

I rode her two starts ago at Hamilton, where she ran well to finish second. Despite that promising run, she seemed to take a step backwards last time out, and she finished sixth over the same course and distance. We’re now dropping into a classified company, which is a basement level for horses. In this race she’ll be getting a bit of weight from some of her rivals, which will help, and if she can bounce back to her penultimate start then I can’t see why she wouldn’t be competitive.

4.55 – Ski Jump (Tina Jackson)

He just bumped into an improver at Beverley last time out, who subsequently went on to bring up a four-timer, so you can definitely mark up that run. He is now 3lb below his last winning mark, so he’s weighted to go well. The main thing he’ll have to prove here though is his stamina, as it’s first go over 1m6f. If he does stay then, I can see him being in contention.

I hope you all have a great weekend, and you’ll hear from me again soon.
