There have been several parallels drawn with Sven-Goran-Eriksson’s England team, where another ‘Golden Generation’ struggled to fulfil their potential. In a team with so many attacking options, it was surprising to hear Southgate cite the lack of a replacement for Kalvin Phillips as the key to unlocking his side’s potential.
Slovenia had a win stolen from their grasp in the last throes of the game against Serbia. They are not here to make up the numbers against England and will be keen to heap further pressure on Southgate’s beleaguered troops. If they can find the opening goal, the pressure levels on England will begin to reach a critical level and the calls for Southgate’s head will grow yet louder.
