France v Belgium: The Road to Quarterfinals

A blockbuster in Dusseldorf kicks off today’s knockout matches. The might of France against the remnants of Belgium’s Golden Generation, with a place in the last 8 on the line.

France have flattered to deceive and, similarly to England, kicked off their group matches with a win and followed it up with two uninspiring draws. They have scored just twice in the tournament, with one of those being an own goal, and were fortunate to see VAR save them from conceding against the Dutch. That said, surely they will finally find a level of form now the stakes have risen.

Belgium recovered from the shock loss against Slovakia and were improved against Romania. However, as with many sides, they turned in a dismal performance in the final round of group games against Ukraine and ended up failing to win their group. They have failed to score in two of their three matches, and I feel that this is the end of the road for what has been a great Belgian side over the last decade.
