French Open Round 2 Preview: Sherif Has The Keys At Roland Garros

With the second round of the French Open already in progress, Lucky Loader takes a look at some of the matches that are yet to be played.
French Open Preview

Victoria Azarenka v Mirra Andreeva

On paper, this looks like a close contest, but I’m going to side with the upcoming Mirra Andreeva. The Russian breezed through her opening round match in straight sets against Emina Bektas and hardly had to break sweat. The 17-year-old is going places, and this year she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. Furthermore, a lot of her best performances have come on clay, so the surface isn’t an issue.

Her opponent, Victoria Azarenka, has been a top player over the years, but her best days are behind her, and she’s struggled at Roland Garros in recent years. I think she might come up short again here.

Madison Keys v Mayar Sherif

The betting makes Madison Keys a warm favourite, but I liked the way Mayar Sherif played in her opening-round match against Yuan Yue. She won in straight sets and didn’t get out of second gear.

This would require the Egyptian to produce one of her career-best performances, but Keys has played a lot of tennis recently, and she didn’t get past the second round here last year. I just have a feeling this could be the upset of the round.

Miomir Kecmanovic v Daniil Medvedev

Mevedev is definitely the class player here, but clay is probably his weakest surface. Last year, he got knocked out in the first round at Roland Garros.

Kecmanovic, on the other hand, seems to like it, and he’s a player who has produced some of his best tennis in 2024.

The Serbian managed to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open this year, and his game seems to be improving at the big events. I can see him giving Medvedev something to think about.
